Acres in the news

How big is an acre, really?  How about a hundred, or ten thousand acres? News stories in the United States are filled with acres, it seems, but their actual area is just not easy to visualize for many of us. Below are some samples, and a pair of calculators that will help you see your own acreage numbers more clearly.

One acre = 43,560 square feet

If it were a square plot of land it would be 208.71 feet on each side.

One thousand acres = 43,560,000 square feet

If it were a square plot of land it would be 1.25 miles on each side.

One million acres = 1,562.5 square miles

If it were a square plot of land it would be 39.5 miles on each side.

Easy 2-step acreage calculator

Big ranches & their acreage

Step 1: Converting acres to square feet or other units.

Enter a number of acres in the first box. (Don’t use commas.) The form will automatically calculate the number of square miles in your acreage. If you want the result in square feet or other units, just select the units from the ‘convert to’ menu.

Step 2: To help visualize the actual size of your acreage, you can use the square root calculator below to see how long each side of your acreage would be if were shaped as a square.

Enter the square feet (or square miles, yards or meters) into the ‘area’ box in the calculator below. The answer will be the length of one side of your parcel if it were square in shape.

Many of the calculators on these pages come from unitconversion.org - the ultimate unit conversion resource
